BOOK BLITZ – What To Charge: Pricing Strategies for Freelancers and Consultants by Laurie Lewis!!

What to Charge:
Pricing Strategies for Freelancers and Consultants
By Laurie Lewis

coverwithBBsealSynopsis: This is the only book to focus exclusively on a question every freelancer faces repeatedly: what to charge. It answers this question in fifteen information-packed chapters that cover such issues as determining the right pricing method for a particular job (e.g., hourly or project rate), learning the going rate, and negotiating a fair fee. What to Charge encourages business practices that freelancers may not have realized are crucial to good pricing decisions, including the best way to record the time on the job and analyses to perform after an assignment is finished. This award-winning book introduces the only two rules of pricing and explains why consistently applying them will assure a successful freelance career.

Working freelancers, both those who are just starting out and those who have been self-employed for years, have consistently praised What to Charge: Pricing Strategies for Freelancers and Consultants. As for more formal recognition of its value, the book tied for first place in the Business/Sales/Economics category and ranked second in the Writing/Publication category of the 2012 Reader Views Literary Awards competition. Previously, it was a finalist for the 2011 USA Best Books award in the Business: Writing and Publishing category.

Although What to Charge: Pricing Strategies for Freelancers and Consultants is a few years old, it is as relevant now as the day it was published. Rather than suggest fees for particular types of freelance work, the book presents techniques for pricing and managing a freelance business. These techniques are timeless and time-tested and are applicable for all self-employed service providers, including writers, editors, graphic designers, website developers, virtual assistants, and other traditional and modern-day freelancers.

Excerpt from”What to Charge”

Initially, Quentin worried that the rate he quoted would be so high that he’d lose the job or so low that he’d live to regret it. But he learned from his mistakes and made some smart moves that transformed his business from one that was just muddling along. For example:

  • Quentin made an effort to find out the going rate for different types of work. He spoke with colleagues in the field (some people might call them “the competition”) and honed his skills at interviewing potential clients so he could identify their budgetary constraints.
  • He experimented with different methods of pricing. Sometimes he charged an hourly fee, but other times he set a per diem rate. He arranged a retainer with a steady client and learned to calculate project rates so that the work would be profitable.
  • He changed his method of record keeping. Quentin began to log his time by the tasks that he performed. When he needed to calculate a realistic project rate or per diem fee, he used task logs from previous assignments to come up with a figure that reflected the anticipated work.
  • Quentin became a tough negotiator. Before talking money with a client, he figured out exactly what he wanted and needed to earn, how low he was willing to go, and what concessions he expected if he couldn’t get top dollar.
  • Quentin retrospectively analyzed his pricing decisions at the end of each job. He calculated how much he could have earned if he had charged on a different basis. At the end of the year, he tallied his earnings from each client and examined them side by side.

REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY – Fighting Redemption by Kate McCarthy!!!!

FightingRedemption_EbookIf you still have not picked up a book by Kate McCarthy, what are you waiting for?!?  There is so much emotion in these books that you physically feel what is happening in the lives of these characters.

I don’t think I can express in words how much you are LIVING the character’s life while reading this book.  Each time Ryan had to walk away, my heart hurt.  And Jake, oh my God, just I can’t say anything about that without spoiling bits and pieces.  Except that Jake is Fin’s brother and Ryan’s best friend.

I’ve included the synopsis below, but I have to tell you, you NEED to read this book.  If you are not hooked on Kate McCarthy by the first chapter, I’ll……..well I don’t know what I will do but I would be surprised!!  :-)

So basically, Fin grows up following around her big brother and his best friend.  Ryan and Jake meet in 5th grade and become more like brothers than friends.  Ryan’s home life is pretty unbearable and Jake’s family takes him in an treats him as their own whenever he is there.  Ryan has always known he wanted to be a soldier and it doesn’t take Jake long to want it too.  So the boys join the Army when they are of age………

That’s it, that’s all I’m giving you for now because the journey this book takes you on is LIFE CHANGING!  It will really make you sit up straighter and think about what is important!

 Synopsis

Ryan Kendall is broken. He understands pain. He knows the hand of violence and the ache of loss. He knows what it means to fail those who need you. Being broken doesn’t stop him wanting the one thing he can’t have; Finlay Tanner. Her smile is sweet and her future bright. She’s the girl he grew up with, the girl he loves, the girl he protects from the world, and from himself.

At nineteen, Ryan leaves to join the Australian Army. After years of training he becomes an elite SAS soldier and deploys to the Afghanistan war. Returning home after six years, one look is all it takes to know he can’t live without her. But sometimes love isn’t enough to heal what hurts. Sometimes people like him can’t be fixed, and sometimes people like Finlay deserve more than what’s left.

This is a story about war and the cost of sacrifice. Where bonds are formed, and friendships found. Where those who are strong, fall hard. Where love is let go, heartache is born, and heroes are made. Where one man learns that the hardest fight of all, is the fight to save himself.

Excerpt

The call disconnected before she could reply, and she tossed the phone beside her with a sigh. Pushing up off the bed, she walked towards her wardrobe. Catching movement from the corner of her eye, she turned her head and jolted. Ryan was leaning casually against the doorframe, his arms folded. Licking his lips, he stepped into the room and shut the door behind him.

“Ryan. You scared me.” She reached for the top she’d tossed on her corner chair a few minutes ago and gave him her back.

Fin felt him come up behind her and she shivered. He reached around, grabbed the shirt from her hands and tossed it on the floor. Suddenly breathless, she looked at it, then at his hands where they came to rest on her stomach.

He was an asshole for doing this to her, but her door was ajar. When Ryan heard her voice and saw her lying on her bed in nothing but lacy pink underwear, he couldn’t stop himself. How did she manage to look so innocent and so sexy all at the same time?

His lids lowered as he looked down over her shoulder, watching his hands as they skimmed up the smooth, taut skin of her belly to cup her breasts firmly.

Her body trembled as he rubbed his thumbs across her nipples. He felt them harden beneath the flimsy lace of her bra.

“Fin,” he breathed, running one hand down along the inner edges of her tanned thigh. Fuck. Her legs were smooth and warm, and he wanted them wrapped around him as he sank himself deep inside her.

Burying his head in her neck, Ryan shifted his hand to cup the pretty lace panties between her thighs and took a deep, shuddering breath. God, he shook with the need to taste her.

“Ryan,” she moaned.

With his other hand, he fisted the soft strands of her hair and yanked her head back, exposing the line of her throat, and he fell on it—sucking and biting the sweet skin until he was unbearably hard.

A tap came at the bedroom door and they both froze. “Fin? Are you heading out soon or eating here first?” Jake called out.

“I-I’ll be right out,” she stammered and took a step forward out of Ryan’s arms. She turned around, meeting his eyes.

“Okay,” Jake called back.

Ryan’s blood pulsed so hard it was a roar in his ears as they stared at each other wordlessly. After a beat of silence, she tore her eyes away and opened the wardrobe door.

“Are you happy now?” she hissed as she grabbed a pair of jeans from the shelves.

low-res Fighting Redemption Teaser 7His eyes on her ass, he muttered, “What?”

She threw the jeans at him and he caught them when they hit him square in the chest. “This. Us. Yes, okay? I want you. Is that what you want to hear? That I dream of you too?” she choked out. “Your hands on me, inside of me, and I ache too.”

Ryan took a step towards her.

“Don’t.” She snatched the jeans out of his hands and tugged them on.

“I’m sorry,” he murmured.

Fin turned, rummaging for a top. She pulled one off a hanger and tugged it on furiously. “You’re sorry. I’m sorry. Everybody’s sorry. Well it’s just one sad, fucking sorry situation, isn’t it?”

Christ, Fin was a fiery inferno when she was mad, and it had his dick swelling even harder. “Fin, I—”

“Enough!” She jabbed a finger in his chest. “There’s hurt in there. I know it. You know it, but you’re not going to move on from it until you let that shit out. Whatever you’re doing now isn’t working. Own it, Ryan. Stop letting it own you.” With that she brushed past him and opened the bedroom door. She looked at him over her shoulder before stalking away.

REVIEW and GIVEAWAY – Needing You by T. Renee Fike

blog-banner**This contains graphic sexual content and situations suitable for readers 18+.**

my teaser 2_edited-1Just what I like to hear!!! If something is marked 18+, I have to at least check it out…..So of course I signed up for the blog tour immediately! There is something so fantastic about finding an author I have never read before that can write a book like this. Too often this type of book has me rolling my eyes at the constant back and forth…..this was NOTHING like that! :-)

But I digress! Needing You was a bit of a surprise for me. I was a little worried it would be the same old, same old. I’m really glad I was wrong.  This book is definitely a slow burn type of book.  Harper and Tucker really take their time learning about each other and even longer for any physical connection.

teaser 3I really, really love that Tucker was the one pushing to reveal pieces of their pasts to each other.  He was very insistent about being ready for each step in their relationship, and never took advantage of Harper when he probably could have so easily.  He has such a bad reputation and she tells him up front that they can be friends and nothing else.  He was definitely found to be the good man I hoped he would be!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book!  I found I had to stop myself from speed reading and force myself to go to sleep because I REALLY wanted to know what happened next.  This book has a very satisfying conclusion and there are a few glimpses into Tucker’s POV that are fun and interesting.  The only bad thing about that was that I found I wanted more of his POV!  There were a few other scenes that I would have loved to get his take on, especially since the two are very quiet about any feelings or thoughts in the beginning…..

EXCERPT

Two weeks later, he packed his belongings and stole his way into Fin’s room. She wasn’t there, so he stretched out on her bed, hands tucked behind his head, eyes trained on the ceiling, and waited.

It was midnight when she came through the door, giggling as she read a message on her phone. Finished, she tossed it on her bedside table and froze when she caught him lying there in the dark.

He heard her breath catch. “Ryan?”

The lamp by her bed switched on, coating the room in a warm, cozy glow. Fin was illuminated, her skin golden in the soft light, her cheeks flushed with happiness.

“What are you …” She trailed off after meeting his eyes. He knew what she saw. He couldn’t hold any of it back—regret, heartache, and loss for something that had never been his.

“You’re leaving,” she choked out.

Ryan couldn’t speak. He watched her stride to the open window, its sheer white curtains billowing. Staring out into the night, she wiped away tears that spilled over and ran down her cheeks.

He blinked, his own eyes burning. “I’m sorry,” he said eventually.

Fin turned and walked across the room. Sinking to the edge of the bed, she stared down at her hands. “When?”

Ryan unlocked his hands from behind his head and reached for her, pulling her down beside him. She stretched out, tucking her head under his chin. Closing his eyes, he breathed her in, allowing his arms to wrap around her. “In the morning.”

Fin’s hand fisted in his shirt as she let out a sob.

“I have to do this,” he whispered hoarsely. He trailed his fingers through her hair and touched his lips to her forehead.

She started to wipe away the tears on her face, and Ryan took hold of her hand, stilling her. “You understand, don’t you, Fin, why I have to do this?”

Ryan needed to know that she understood he wasn’t leaving her, he was leaving his past, and trying to build a new future with the Army.

“I do.” She choked again and buried her face in his neck, sobs breaking free.

“Don’t,” he whispered thickly. “Please don’t cry. You have such a big future ahead of you. You’re going to do big things with your life. Don’t let anyone stop you from being who you need to be, okay?”

Fin nodded into his neck.

Ryan pushed back so he could look her in the eye. He wouldn’t be there to watch over her anymore, so he needed to know she would look out for herself. “Promise me, Fin.”

“I promise.”

Satisfied, he reached out and switched off the lamp. Thrust into sudden darkness, Ryan laced his fingers in hers and held her close. When her tears dried up, she drifted off into a deep slumber. In the early hours of the morning, he pressed a soft kiss to her cheek, and disentangling himself, he left the room. Having already said his goodbyes to Mike and Julie earlier in the evening, Ryan clicked the door shut softly behind him and left the house, careful not to look back.

That was the last he saw of Finlay Tanner.
